Alaska Trail Ride

On the Trail
in Skagway, Alaska
Sitting in a little shed on the pier beside the huge Princess Sun cruise ship, Eddie and I watched for the tour guide to arrive and take us for a horseback ride back in the trails just outside Skagway, Alaska.
It was 2594 miles from home at West Hamlin, West Virginia, to Seattle, Washington. Then it was another thousand miles to Skagway. Now 3600 miles away from home, it is fulfilled.
It was a dream of mine to go to every state in the Union, since I had been in 48 states and Canada and Mexico before I was 21 years old because Mother and Daddy liked to travel. I was an only child and we spent every summer on a week or two vacation of traveling the good old USA year after year.
In 1981 my husband agreed to go to Hawaii, since the kids were growing up.
"If we're going as a family, we had better go now," Eddie said, since Alanna was already in college and the boys were in high school.
Now arriving in Alaska on our 46th Wedding Anniversary I had completed all 50 states and we were also going for a horseback ride just out back of Skagway. At one time I wanted to now ride a horse in all states, but I have abandoned that goal. I just want to ride where I want to ride.

GREETINGS FROM NEW YORK CITY! Today we paid a visit to the Claremont Riding Academy, located close to Central Park in Manhattan's upper west side.
Claremont is a National Historical Site built in 1892, the only remaining riding stable in Manhattan. The multistory barn is connected by ramps, with horses kept in stalls in the basement and on the second floor. Riders have little or no access to the stables and tours are not permitted. There is a small indoor riding arena with several posts that interrupt the space.
Claremont offers a range of lessons (dressage, hunt seat equitation, jumping), classes (horse care, stable management), and has a show team that competes in the area. They also rent horses for riding in Central Park, but only to experienced riders since getting to the park requires riding a horse through traffic on city streets.
The concept of a riding stable in the heart of The Big Apple (a common nickname for New York City) is a romantic notion from the rider's perspective. Can you imagine the clip-clopping of horse shoes drowning out the noise of car engines and taxi horns as you make your way to the beautiful bridle paths that traverse Central Park?
But from the horse's perspective, Claremont looks a bit like living in a teeny New York apartment. That seems anything but romantic, and certainly not as tasty as a *real* big apple...

Review: Airs Beneath the Moon by Toby Bishop

Since starting Girls Horse Club I've had the great fortune to meet and work with many inspiring people who also happen to love horses. So when an author contacted us offering to send a preview copy of her latest book Airs Beneath the Moon, I was thrilled. But now that I've finished reading it, I'm sad.
Why? Because I want to keep reading.
I want to continue getting lost in the story of Larkyn Hamley, a young farm girl whose life changes course when she bonds with Tup, a winged horse, and joins the Academy of the Air to train for an elite team of courageous young women who partner with their flying horses to serve and protect the Duchy of Oc.
I want to follow the growth of Larkyn's spirited bondmate who (like Larkyn) does not fit the mold at the Academy. I want to imagine him flying above the Duchy, a place unlike any that exists in our time and space, but one that feels familiar to anyone who loves horses.
I want to learn more about the interesting characters. Like Phillippa Winter, the kind horsemistress who takes Larkyn under her wing (so to speak). And Hester Morning, who sees Larkyn for who she is, not where she comes from.
I want to detest the mean characters, like Petra Sweet, who think Larkyn is inferior just because she's a farm girl who rides bareback. Or William, heir to the Duke's throne, who is so desperate to experience the power of flight he's capable of evil things.
I want to continue feeling all the emotion and excitement that comes with being transported into a great horse story filled with interesting characters and imaginative settings.
An inspired writer can give wings to your imagination. Although I may never experience the thrill of flying a winged horse, thanks to the talent of Toby Bishop, I can imagine.
NOTE: Airs Beneath the Moon is written for fluent readers (young adult to adult), so younger girls may find it challenging. Also, the bad guy in the story is really bad. Although the author doesn't go into detail, some of his evil actions may be troubling for younger readers. If Airs Beneath the Moon was a movie, it would probably have a PG rating (parental guidance suggested). If parents have a concern, we suggest they read the book first or (better yet) read it with you.

The Horse Farms of Ocala, Florida
Written by

Several weeks ago I took a Horse and Buggy Ride through the Country to tour some of the Horse Farms in Ocala, Florida. I have included a slideshow which can be found at my website,
http://www.scenicearth.com/Ocala.asp. It was beautiful, romantic and a very relaxing morning. There was a cool breeze, spanish moss hanging from the trees, no rain and except for a few cars passing by, quiet and peaceful.
The hoofbeats on the pavement alone were very relaxing to hear and provided the soundtrack for our morning ride along with our driver serving as tour guide telling us about the neighboring farms and history behind them. The scenery was beautiful. We saw the horse farms that belong to Warner-Lambert Pharmaceuticals along with dozens of others whose names I cannot even remember there were so many.
When we got back from our horse and Buggie ride, Dan, the horse that was carrying us, walked right up to me and let me rub his face as my way of saying 'Thank you' for carrying us around all morning. It was quite humbling to see this huge, powerful animal that could drag a carriage filled with three people around the country for an hour with no effort at all, walk right up to me and show me such humble love and kindness.
If you ever want to visit 'Horse Country' in Florida, Ocala is the place to go. It is not like the rest of the state, growing and developing at the speed of sound. It is green, covered in white picket fences and has a slower paced lifestyle nestled away in a small town setting unlike Orlando and South Florida.

I saw that several people here have racing horses.
I always thought that this was only done for business purpose, as I understand they are quite expensive.
Anyone having them just for fun?

In the Equus magazine I get there is a small article "nothing to celebrate" It basicly states that for the first time in its 68 yr history the Tennesee Walking Horse Celebration ended WITHOUT crowning a new world champion.
When the final event of an 11 day competition, the Champion class was canceled. When 5 out of 9 entries were disqualified by inspectors for soring violations.

BRASS GOOF
Once upon a time in a land of fences and grass,
There lived a horse the colour of brass.
He tried to rule his land with a swift hard hoof,
But actually he was a bit of a goof.
He‘d say “Move away, this is my spot”
As he sent the others off at a trot.
“Mine, its all mine!” he’d prance with glee.
“These apples are all for me!”
His ruling was very unfair indeed,

About Paso Fino Horses
What makes a Paso Fino so special?
There are many reasons that a Paso gets under your skin and into your heart-but it always comes down to one most enduring trait- their naturally genetic gait, creating for the rider the smoothest, most comfortable, mile after mile, "no bounce" ride of any horse you have ever encountered!
How do they do this?

A man goes to a party and has too much to drink. His friends plead with him to let them take him home. He says NO -- he only lives a mile away.
About five blocks from the party, the police pull him over. They check his license and ask him to get out of the car and walk the line. Just as he starts, the police radio blares out a notice of a robbery taking place in a house arou

She was unable to get up but still has movement in her legs and swishes her tail. Floss has been trying to get up but one leg is not listening to her brain. Hi,
I have a 1 year old miniature horse that I like to put in the back of my ford ranger so I can take her places. I've been using a dog ramp but it's to narrow and steep. I usually have to back up to a hill or something and push her up. Which makes her legs splay out so I can hardly get her up with out help.
Anyway I was wondering if anybody had any sugestions on what I could use or make
