By the way this mare is a Mystie and the gal sweats like no tomorrow. I took her out on a ride the other day and her back was dry when I removed the saddle, but everywhere you see where I clipped was wet and even foaming. Normaly we just don't ride her in the winter becasue we can not rinse the sweat away (its to cold) and she takes far to long to dry. I plan on riding her this winter often, my only recourse was to clip her. Yes ...she does have a new blanket to go along with her new hair-do'.
here is another pic' not sure she likes it or not:S
She doesn't look happy in the second picture. Does she not like her new do? hmy: I have never clipped my horses. Not my thing but if it works for the horse..
I know she looks ridiculous:P I just hope we never ride by a mirror and she gets a look at herself she may just dump me....LOL.
You reallly can not shave their backs, without risk of chaffing or scalding from the saddle. Think of shaving you legs and when the hair grows in a bit, the feeling of your socks on them drives you nutz. Well I can only imagine it drives a horse nutz as well. Like I mentioned before last time we rode her back under the saddle was pretty much dry, but where I shaved was soaking wet. I think that if I take her coat off she will stay cool enough so as to not develope so much sweat, if she does that is OK too. I can rinse her and because her hair is short it will dry fast.
It worked wonderfully...yes, she still sweats but not as much. I was able to rinse and wipe off the sweat and the short hair dryed in no time. Some folks I talked to said she looked like a European hunting horse. That might be the case IF I rode english, but I am trailriding in a western get-up. I am pretty sure I look out of place.
All that matters is it works and I am riding. I am curious if after a winter of being clipped if come next spring when she sheds if the hair color will be differant from the part that is clipped to the part that is not. She sheds out very nice so no reason to clip her for the spring and summer.
In New Zealand we have a lot of our horses clipped. I don't show so have never worried about it. I'd just like to get more time to ride fullstop. :P Pleased clipping her has made a difference for you.
