    training help

I am currently training a 9 year old gelding that has never been taught basic riding cues. My problem is that whenever I try to lope him or back him up he turns his head to the right and refuses to do what I am asking. Does anyone have any advice on how to correct this problem? Thanks in advance

Hi. Well there is something you can try but i need more details first. Ok, so you are riding him in a straight line or backing him and he turns right on his own? If so, then i would say he needs to be reminded how to steer. Does he neck rein or pull rein? Do you steer him with your legs or just the reins? Let me know and i will give you tips on what to do.

hi, I ride my gelding in a side pull and yes I do rback him in a straight line. When he turns his head to the right he will not move at all. By the way, thanks for the response.

Ok, so he turns his head to the right and just stops? You need forward movement. Try circleing him to the right. Don't let him stop. If he does, squeeze, kick or tap him or what ever cue you use to get him moving. Circle him a few times and then try to move out straight. If he turns his head again, circle. He will eventually get tired of the circles. If that doesn't work, i have other tips.

Sounds good. If that doesn't work, you may need to go back to more ground work and basics. Good luck
