Bad situation for a couple horses at my barn

There are two horses at my barn who have owners that think it's ok to leave for a week and leave their horses in the barn for the whole time without having the stalls cleaned. Amazingly, the woman who owns the barn let them do this since she only cares about the money she's making, obviously, and not the animals. The barn owner was instructed by the owners to feed these horses just one flake of hay ;Coastal hay, in the morning and one at night. They got fed gain once a day, of course, on these empty stomachs. The rest of us not only had to put up with the smell and sight of these poor creatures for the entire week but we also had to endure their incessant nickering to us to feed their empty starving stomachs. I have printed an article to leave on their hay which explains the importance of feeding enough hay and why and how much hay is necessary per horse per day. What do you think of this !

I think you have every right to voice your opinion in a letter or note. I only hope the owners are just ignorant to horse care and proper feeding and not uncaring. Also that your note will taken' as a helpful suggestion.

Otherwise they will simply snear... wad it up and toss it away. Doing nothing other then telling you to mind you own business. To me personally the fact they are stalled 24/7 is far worse then the fact they get very little hay and grain. If they look in good weight, I don't worry so much about what they are eating.

i dont know about you guys but i would make a record of what went on every day.taken pictures every day and called the spca.unfoutinatly all you need is water, a bale of hay on the property and theres nothing they can do.but it will be on record.that way any other abuse that may happen will send them out fast.or just do what you can for the horses and chalk it off as a good deed..i myself would have to clean the stalls.cant stand dirty stalls make me nuts.and i would of gave them more hay.and if the owner said any thing to me!well you dont wanna know what id say to them lol

I don't like the idea of the horses in dirty stalls either.. In New Zealand most horses live out in the paddock (thank goodness) so at least they can feed themselves.. Surely if the owners were going away they could work a deal with the barn owner to help with cleaning out the stalls. Wonder how they would like to eat, poop and sleep in the same place for a week.. inch: Bet it would be different for them, shame for the horses.. Good luck and well done for speaking out.. B)

I am the same as Whinny I would of cleaned out the stalls myself but made a note of how long and how often I had to do it then send the owner a bill for my time and work!!!! Its not the horses fault that they are made to stand 27/7 in a stall, so I could not stand by and watch them be neglected this way. But thats just me. Great idea about the note, some people do need reminding. Then again the barn owners need a "kick up the backside" (not literally) for letting this sort of thing go on in their barn. They should be the ones perhaps cleaning the stalls then they could easily justify charging a rate for it!!!!

    Knighthorse, first: welcome to horsering

Is there legally nothing you can do? Animal rights organization must be able to press on the owners a bit, no?

Hopefully the owners now will pay more attention after you wrote that note, since they'll know they're being watched.

Good on you knight horse, i think you handled the situation well, i just hope the owners do something about it. For the horses sake. It amazes me that people could do this, if they dont want to take the time to care for their pets properly, why do they have them.
