Floating a horse. - 2007/02/03 00:25
I turn the trailer into a stall. I place metal panels around the opening of the trailer to form a sort of paddock and feed inside the trailer, moving hay further and further into the trailer so they are all the way in eating. I do this for about a week or so. Now they know being in the trailer is not bad and they are familiar with it. Then it is a matter of asking them to enter when I lead them and then I lead them right back out. I always back them out just before I think they might do it on their own, so it is always my idea. Then I open the windows (I have a slant trailer) I lead them in have them stick there head out the window, while they are checking it out i shut the panel inside the trailer that seperates horses and go around and give them treats, then go back and remove them. Wait for another day to lead them in lock them in and drive around a short bit and back home.
Now if the young horse is a foal or weanling I simply load mom. Then slowly load them and remove halter and shut doors leaving him room to roam around and check it out.
Somethings I DO NOT do, I do not tie horses in the trailer if they are young. I simply put them in reach thru window unhook lead. Young horses always do much better left to find their own way of balance and such without restriction of being tied. I realize tying does depend alot on the type of float or trailer you own as well. ---------
