Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/11 20:42 I swear I have a curse over my head. I should never, I mean never have my vet "paid in full" because you can count on the fact IF I do a horse will give me reason to call the vet for another outstanding bill.
Yep' I did it thinking my curse had lifted (silly me ) I paid my outstanding bill at the vet office. Even over paid as I knew I had a gelding coming up in late Oct. and wanted to pay before hand.
Then tragedy struck, the mare I had intentions of selling cut the hec' out of her hock. How? I can only imagine while staying on a friends pasture kicking at neighboring horses, got her leg caught in barbed wire ..OF COURSE, hate that stuff Needless to say the vet bill is back up there and I still need to come up with gelding money later. Luck was on my side as the mare will be laid up for a couple months but it did not cut into the joint capsule. So much for selling that horse anytime soon. (how did she know she was up for sale anyway ) Just another curse working it's way in the back door. You know put a horse up for sale and something happens where you must instead, take the horse off the market.
Oh the joys of horse ownership..gotta love em'

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/12 00:36 I guess you shouldn't have tried to sell her on the first place

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/12 06:01 Sounds like my luck.. I sold a mare and within 3 days she was coming home as she had bucked the new owner off... She had never done anything like that in the 2 years we have had her..

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/12 20:01 That must be true..TBOY... because i have a friend having simular trouble selling 2 of her horses. They behave fabulously for her and horrible for prospective buyers which scares them away.

In conclusion... I have decided we do not wait for the right buyer to come along, we as sellers are waiting for the horse to decide which buyer they like.

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/12 23:40 Keep in mind that for the mare, being sold is a radical change.
Her entire herd is replaced within a night...

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/13 03:13 This mare would be pleased as punch if she did not have a herd to contend with, or if she had a bunch of submissives to push around. I just have to many alpha mares and while they basicly tolerate each other there is no clear cut ruler of the herd.
They sure do take notice if you move someone though or take someone away. They all the sudden act like you are hauling away their best friend. I have to remind them "were you not just 5 min. ago biting and chasing this one away, thought I was doing you a favor"

OH yeah, I am crazy talk to my horses all the time, pretty sure neighbors think I am BONKERS

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/13 16:15 LOL..that is funny bears boss, I am sure my hubby feels the same.
By the way my daughters horse Cleo' always in heat as well more so if a strange horse comes in to the picture, she is BAM! in season. How does she do that anyway?

So far I have not paid off my vet bill yet and horses are doing well, no one is ill or had any more injuries. The weather is staying somewhat warm and I want to wait for cold weather to geld the colt. I may wait until Nov. for the gelding.

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/10/13 21:39 I had a lady come out to my mare who does Alignment work to horses. Kate was out in 2 places on her neck, around the whither and her near hind quarter was out too. Since having that work done, she is only in heat when meant to be and a much happier girl. I think I must nearly own the vets clinic (well his truck anyway.. ) Between having 4 lots of teeth and all the rest of it with our other animals..

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/11/13 03:57 Youch! I can sympathize - my family has had some bad luck BUYING horses.... fatal allergic reaction, navicular after two weeks... those kinds of things...

And for what I'm about to say, I'm not being judgemental, just a concerned horse lover...

My first reaction (which I noticed hasn't been mentioned yet) is BARBED WIRE?!?! That is the worst stuff you can fence a horse with for exactly the reason that happened to you. ANYTHING is better than barbed wire. If you can replace it - somehow - even with flagged rope - it would be much safer. I have heard way too many horror stories involving barbed wire...

I hope your mare recovers well and wish you well (and a good home)should you decide to sell her later.

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/11/14 19:44 The mare is doing very well, I am keeping her leg wrapped just to keep it clean so it heals well with very little scaring so far so good. Still owe my vet soem money so the curse is being held back...LOL.

As to the barb wire ..I feel the same way about it darn nasty stuff will never have it on my property. The horse was not on my property but being boarded out on a pasture that had an electric fence in front of the barbwire, I thought I was OK. Later I learned the electric was not working properly. Regardless after this insodent I pulled all my horses off the property, and brought them home.

Re:Vet paid in full..CURSE - 2006/11/14 19:55 I had a horse go though a bared wire fence too. First day I had her... She was chased out of the paddock by some drunk people and them taken to the dog pound with her wee paddock mate.. I didn't find out until the next day when I went to the paddock to see them. She went through 2 bared wire fences and 1 electic fence.. She was very sore but made a full recovery on that time... Cuts all to her chest and front mainly. She was a wonderful old girl. Even the guy at the pound and the vet were impressed with how calm she was to work with.
Rest in peace Milly...
