Racing horses question - 2006/06/24 16:11 I saw that several people here have racing horses.
I always thought that this was only done for business purpose, as I understand they are quite expensive.
Anyone having them just for fun?

Re:Racing horses question - 2006/07/03 21:55 i dont have a racehorse but i remember reading an article where they featured racehorses being trained to become riding horses. apparently after some training they make magic rides and some even go on to be showjumpers and dressage horses

Re:Racing horses question - 2006/07/13 19:15 Yes! Ex-Racehorses can make great riding/competition horses. We have 3 Thoroughbreds at our yard, Polly has just come out of training and is a great hack, Red has just been sold to a stud farm to be bred from, She's by Mujahid (USA), but she was a great riding horse, good in traffic and in the school.
I would definatly recommend Tb's but they do need an experienced rider/trainer as they are highly strung at times!

Re:Racing horses question - 2006/07/14 19:45 We have horses racing and retired. Not everyone does it for a business. We have yet to win (much), but we are working our way up to better horses. We started with one we got form a local sale barn that our neightbor (our race trainer) tracked down the papers to and thought he might actually make a race horse. We have had some trials and tribulations, but it is additive and we have kept in the business.

We tend to get emotionally attached to our horses so I wouldn't call it a "real" business, but it is a nice tax rightoff.

We will have a chance at winning next year. We claimed a horse and of course it had some issues. He placed third in a race for us and then was mostly lame. We knew he had some knee chips, but this was more than that. We did surgergy to removed the chips thus spending what he had earned in the race and then some on him. While doing the surgery they found a hairline crack in one of the leg bones that they had not seen on the xrays. Long story shorter. He is healing and not taking any unsound steps. We find out next week if he gets to have unsupervised turn out. He looks wonderful. The trainer has been really working with him to get him back sound. She keeps all out horses that way. We are looking forward to next spring and racing him. If he can place thrid in that condition he will fly when he doesn't hurt.

You can see on our website that we have several of our ex racers for sale. They make wonderful riding horses. And if you think about it they should. What horse other than a race horse gets ridden every single day form the time they ar etwo or so? I know some can develop problems and it does take sometime to teach them that walking is OK, but they ahve lots of training with humans on their backs and working with them.

We do try to find the right match and provide some training with horse and rider before we sell any of our horses. As www.horsematch.net relates. We ahve been horses traded with before. you come home with a horse and get something different several days later. It's not fun trying to make something meet your program.

Hope this helps and you have more comments/questions.

Re:Racing horses question - 2006/07/15 17:53 Now we aren't suppose to talk about them in that way. The trainer doesn't want any unnecessary claims, but we are way off in racing with him. ( You will notice that none of the currently racing TB's are on our website.) And I don't think you will come take him. His name is Loud Forum. He is the most beutiful grey and we are hoping that after his racing career we can keep him to ride. He has been a gem to rehab. I am sure he will be just as great to ride.

Retraining is left to the husband and kids. I stick with older horses, so maybe when Forum is 20 plus I will think about riding him. When he decides it's too much effort to run much. My TB is that way. He never ran. When I feel his pent up energy I find a een aged girl to run the dickens out of him and we are good again.

We have another promising one in training. He has raced 16 times and placed 1st 4 times. His last several races have not been well, but his previous trainer was feeding him only beet pulp. NO hay or grain. Our trainer talked us in to buying him, by telling us he was starved. Works most everytime. It was at the end of the meet and we have yet to see him run for us, but an all TB meet opens the first of August and we will get in more races.

Our older horse in training my hubby bought for his 50th Bday last November at the sale. The trainer thought she could do something with him, and he has placed 5th a few times. He gets one or two more races and we will bring him home. He seems to not be wanting to win anymore. You can tell when they quit. He will come home and be hubby's back up ride. His main ride is a TB that ran a few times and could have been really fast, but she wouldn't run straight. I have seen her play in the pasture and just BLOW by everyone. She toys with the others (TB and QH's) and let them catch up and then puts on the afterburners again. It is amazing. If she would just do that for the jock. But she only runs right for Rick and he is too heavy to jock.

It's fun to see your horse run on the track. And sometimes even more fun to see them relaxing in the front pasture after you know they tried their hardest for you and now they get green grass. Hope you are having a great weekend. I think there is a trail ride in the works at our house. It's a bit hot, but then I don't think they will be out long.

Never thought about that...
First time I'm speaking with a race horses owner so I guess I'll learn a lot of things...

Re:Racing horses question - 2006/07/17 16:58 It's real easy to retrian those that have had enough with racing. It's a bit more difficult with ones that have not won or were retired before they decided they had enough. And that's just speaking from the ones we have been around.

You can tell when they have had enough. They keep getting furhter back in the race or not trying. The hardest is when they get hurt. It's better to retire them before that, but anything can happen.

Rick worked with the two on the web this weekend. They know how to run, so we teach them that it's great to just walk and that is what the human wants now. Bud was carrying teenagers around. He tried a few things, but they never let him get over a trot and he was great. Flag never got out of a walk. Just have to retrain what the human wants and now it is not running full out all the time. Both seem to like that part, but both have been done for a while.

Hope this helps. I haven't been a race owner long, but it is fun and addicitive. Most of the ex racers we have been around have been wonderful to work with when they retire. Just had one mare that was a handful, but she never really got a chance at winning. We found a guy that loves to ride her and puts up with her tricks. There are horses and folks for all kinds.

Have a great week and try to stay cool!

Re:Racing horses question - 2006/08/06 06:21 i have a racehorse purely for fun only. i cant explain the feeling when your horse is racing. it is overwhelming.
going to the races is a great day out, but when you own a racehorse, getting involved with the trainer and jockey makes you feel special. its even a better feeling when your horse wins.

it can be very expensive and i dont expect to make any money at all. which a lot of people think why do it, but until youre watching your horse race, its hard to understand.

Re:Racing horses question - 2006/11/02 02:48 I've had a few retired standard breeds over the last 15 years. Their have mainly been lovely horses that are so welling to please and generally layed back in nature. All bar 1 who was totally unbroken and left unhandled. She was given to me but proved to much for me so I passed her on to someone else who had time and experience to break her into saddle and now she is in a loving family who adore her Just as all horses should... I've also had T/breds but have not had as much of a good run with them. Too highly strung for me.. I like a relaxed ride.

Re:Racing horses question - 2007/03/14 09:02 I have 2 ex racers, the one in my pic is "yodeltilyourblue" hes 6 year old gelding , I call him Blue. The other is Duece. Blue won over a 100,000 racing , but stopped running. Duece ran 11 races , best was a 2nd. then he almost died from West Nile , took almost 2 years to recover . They are ridden English and Western, and I retrained them both . Takes some time and patience, but well worth it

Re:Racing horses question - 2008/05/09 19:19 I have a 3 yr old never raced, not even broke to ride yet. She's going to be a breeze as we've been on her back both bare back and saddled, and she's learning to be directed by her face. I love her to death and she's gonna be awesome. At this point we don't plan to use her for anything other than just a "saddle and go" trail horse. but it's early and who knows what the future holds. I know lots of people with retired TBs and they are all loved.
